3 Tips to Prepare for your Newborn Session
From the moment you see your baby, you want to soak up everything! You take in every little detail about them, their cute lips, tiny feet, what their fingers look like, the color of hair and eyes…these details are very special. You keep trying to memorize every detail and you’ll want to remember these moments for the rest of your life.
You’ll want to preserve these fleeting days—a photography session will be so special to you.
Follow our 3 top tips to help have a smooth newborn session for you and baby.
- Schedule your session ahead of time. Most photographers only photograph newborn sessions before day 14. Professionals like to photograph your newborn during this time period for the best results. This is a small period of time, so thinking ahead is perfect! By scheduling ahead of time, your photographer will be ready for your babies’ grand entrance. Booking in advance also ensures your photographer isn’t booked up. Waiting til the last minute, you won’t be able to shop for your preferred photographer but your shopping will be based only on availability.
- Keep your baby awake prior to our session. We know newborns sleep for most of the day, they absolutely sleep a lot and controlling their sleep is hard. However, keeping them awake prior to their session can be helpful for when you arrive to your session. We love the babies sleepy, this way we are able to pose them comfortably. This will lead to peaceful pictures and not red face, mad baby photos.
- Feed your baby 20-30 minutes prior to your schedule session time. What’s cuter than a sleepy baby? That’s what we want for a newborn session! A full tummy will ensure a happy and calm baby for their portrait session. This will be very helpful for transitioning baby into poses. We always recommend bringing extra formula, diapers & a pacifier to your newborn session!

What you need to know
A few other helpful things you’ll want to know surrounding your newborn session.
-Try to keep the volume down in the studio, we like to maintain a calm environment. Loud noises can disrupt the baby and unsettle them during posing.
-We recommend the parents to be in solid colors, neutrals photograph very nicely against the babies skin tone. This color palette is timeless.
-To prepare for a few fussy moments, we recommend bringing extra formula, diapers, wipes, and a pacifier. A pacifier can be helpful when transitioning baby between poses.
